Self –Mutilation is showing others that you were hurt by hurting yourself.  The most common way of it is slicing one’s self with a knife, razor blade, shard of glass, or other sharp objects. Cuts are usually made on some body parts like the arms, legs and wrists, but some people cut hidden areas on the body.

Others frequently think of this act as an attempt of suicide but it is not. It is more of a feeling of release of freedom in emotional high or emotional pain when they cut. It is a coping mechanism. Self- injurers do this not just because they feel it is a release of their stress but they do this as a way of showing a cry for help. They find it a help to release anger, to punish ones-self, to relieve guilt or to feel alive. A research study explained that victims of this are usually high school and college students who experienced abuse in their childhood stage or one that has inadequate parental nurturing. These tragic situations affects them and they were not able to share their feeling with someone. Their suppressed pain and emotion results in another struggle in life.

To help someone who suffered from this, a professional counsellor or therapist should be consulted. You can help a self-injurer too by lending an ear to them and be a friend to them. Pray for them and show God’s love. They need you! They need us! Know what they feel by being aware of profile feelings. See it below:
